Can Ceramic Coating Improve the Durability of Your Car’s Paint?

Ceramic coating is one of the hottest new products in the automotive detailing world, and for good reason. It offers amazing paint protection, hydrophobic abilities and more to make washing your car far easier and faster. However, this doesn’t mean that it will completely protect your vehicle from everything that life can throw at it. In fact, it’s pretty clear that your ceramic coating will degrade over time and need to be maintained and replaced.

The simple answer to this question is that a ceramic coating will improve the durability of your vehicle’s paint by protecting it from abrasion, chemicals and UV radiation. However, the actual results that you’ll get will depend on a variety of factors, including the quality of the ceramic coating and the condition of your vehicle’s paint.

While ceramic coatings do offer a number of impressive benefits, such as increased shine and abrasion resistance, they won’t do much to protect your car from rock chips or other damage that can occur over time. If you want to protect your paint from chipping, you should look into a clear bra or paint protection film instead.

The most important factor in determining how durable your ceramic coating will be is the hardness grade. The higher the hardness grade, the better it will be at resisting abrasion and scratching. You’ll want to go with a ceramic coating that has a high hardness rating, such as 9H or above, to ensure the best durability and longevity.

Another factor that will determine how long your ceramic coating lasts is the way you care for your vehicle. The cleaners you use, the way you wash your vehicle and even the temperature can all impact how well it holds up over time. You’ll want to avoid using harsh chemical cleaners, especially if they have ammonia or phosphates, and you should always wash your car with a soft microfiber mitt. Additionally, you should never wash your car in circular motions as this can lead to abrasion and swirl marks that will decrease the durability of your ceramic coating.

One of the most effective ways to extend the lifespan of your ceramic coating is by applying an additional layer overtop of it. There are a lot of different options for this, from sprayable ceramic and graphene boost products that you can simply apply and wipe off to thick SiO2 slick coats that you can apply to your already ceramic-coated vehicle every other month or so.

Unfortunately, if you decide to invest in a professional ceramic coating application, you’ll probably end up spending a few grand or more on the job. This is because the surface of your vehicle will need to be in pristine condition before a pro ceramic coating installer can apply it. This will mean a whole lot of scrubbing with a clay bar, a ton of isopropyl alcohol spraying and lots of hours polishing with an approved buffing compound and power buffer tool.
